Michigan Requirements

What is required to obtain a Real Estate License in the State of Michigan?

An applicant for a real estate salesperson license must be 18 years of age and have successfully completed education and examination requirements required by the Occupational Code, PA 299 of 1980, as amended.

Effective December 1, 2007, prior to taking the exam, salesperson candidates are required to apply for their license on-line at www.michigan.gov/iCOLA. This system (iCOLA) will allow applicants who have completed the application process on-line, and have had a broker verify their employment relationship, to receive their license immediately upon passing the licensing examination. This system requires brokers to go on-line to verify that an applicant is approved for employment by their office (this would be the same as signing the bottom of a salesperson's paper application in the past). Brokers must register at www.michigan.gov/iCOLA.

What are the steps to licensure?

  1. Register for and complete the required education criteria, which is 40 hours of Real Estate Fundamentals including (4) clock hours of civil rights law and equal opportunity in housing.
  2. Apply for licensure. Prior to taking the licensing exam, salesperson candidates are required to apply for their license on-line at www.michigan.gov/iCOLA. This system (iCOLA) will allow applicants who have completed the application process on-line, and have had a broker verify their employment relationship, to receive their license immediately upon passing the licensing examination. If you do not have a broker at the time you apply for your license you may still apply and name a broker later, you have one year to finish the licensing process once you pass the exam.
  3. Fill out the exam application and pay fees. Once you meet your education criteria and have applied for licensure, you can begin the process in order to take the real estate license examination. To do this, you will be required to fill out the application found in the back of The Real Estate Broker and Salesperson Candidate Information Bulletin and pay the examination fee. You must complete this application and be approved before you will be able to schedule an exam.
  4. Schedule the exam. You must schedule the exam in advance at one of the test sites in the state.
  5. Take the exam.

Where do I register and take the exam?

The Michigan real estate examinations are administered by PSI Services, LLC. The Real Estate Broker and Salesperson Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB) has been posted to PSI's website at www.psiexams.com. Follow the prompts to select "Michigan" as the state and the type of exam. The CIB details examination registration procedures and exam content.
